I know those strains

I know those strains you’re whistling now
You hear the music too—
Seductive little madrigals—
O yes, I’m sure you do.

You talk to me about the starlings
I say it’s chickadees.
Let’s both of us debate the birds
And never mind the bees—

The bee that flies melodiously
To kiss the neighbor’s flower;
The neighbor’s hummingbird that sips
The nectar from the bower.

We both of us know that refrain.
Our better angels wring
Their hands all while we hum the tunes
Those other angels sing.

I know those strains

  1. I think this one might rival Morning Glories for me. I will have to let it soak in then give it some time to breathe. Anybody who can’t see that this is so much better than the poetry published in rags like TAPR is blind (to poetry) and deaf (to rhythm). Excellent work!

    • It’s interesting to me, the poems that you like. And thank you for the fierce and diffident praise. :) Maybe it’s wrong, but it does kinda warm the cockles of the heart. I needed that.

    • Dear Mr Patrick Gillespie,

      Hello! I must concur with Thomas about the rhythm in your poem entitled “I know those strains”. Those strains and refrain can indeed be set into a song! In addition, I am suitably impressed by your rhyming poetry, in which you have excelled here. Since I have been composing mainly rhyming poems, often with end rhymes, internal rhymes, alliterations, assonances, consonances, sibilances as well as rhythmic devices, syllabic schemes, musical patterns, and other subtle or overt features, I naturally notice and gravitate to such features in your poems. Hence, I have many good reasons to like your poems.

      Considering that you have such a good knack of composing poems, I would like to inform you that I am currently running the 📜 Collaborative Poetry Challenge ✍🏻 in my post metaphorically entitled “📈🌆 Growing Humanity with Artificial Intelligence: A Sociotechnological Petri Dish with Latent Threats, Existential Risks and Challenging Prospects 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦🤖🧫☣️“. The detail on how to participate in the challenge can be found in the said post published at

      Wishing you and Thomas a very happy May and a fine late springtime doing or enjoying whatever that satisfies you the most, whether aesthetically, physically, intellectually or spiritually, including composing more excellent poems for us to savour!

    • Thanks for your comment and especially for the invitation (and for all your likes). :) I’m not good at writing on commission, but if something occurs to me to write, I’ll definitely send it your way.

      I know those strains is already one of the most downloaded among my poems. A bit unexpected, to me, but it seems to have struck a chord with a good many readers.

    • Dear Patrick,

      I would like to clarify that my invitation for you to take part in collaborative poetry has nothing to do with writing on commission. You are welcome to see what poems have been submitted and featured in my said post.

      I shall be very delighted and grateful if you could kindly visit my said post and give me some feedback there. Thank you in anticipation.

      Yours sincerely,

  2. Once I ran across this little ditty, that has stuck with me for a long time. Since I cannot find the ditty or the author again, I am beginning to think that I wrote it. If you run across it somewhere else, please let me know, but I will share it here anyway.

    I do not praise to flatter;

    I don’t critique to destroy.

    If it stinks, it doesn’t matter.

    It’s the sharing we enjoy.
