The Best of Poetry: Internet 2010 – A Call for Submissions

After my last post, I imagined creating an anthology called Way Better than the Best American Poetry: 2010.Then I had a better idea.I’d like to take submissions from all you who blog on the Internet. I’d like to create an E-Book out of our best and most popular posts. The posts can be essays and a poem, but not a poem without “a post” and not more than one. In an ideal world, I would pay each of you for your submission. What I’m willing to do is to create an E-Book out of our posts that we can each sell on our blogs (among other places). We would sell the E-Book for the same price – maybe a dollar. I would like to produce something by the end of June.

This is a new era. This is for those of us who publish on the web rather than in print media. We all have readers who enjoy what we write. Let’s look after each other and celebrate what we do.

The entry requirements are as follows:

  1. The subject is poetry.
  2. Keep it to the English language.
  3. The rights to your post or poem needs to be yours.
  4. It can’t have been published in any print format.
  5. The post or poem has to have been posted in 2010.
  6. The focus is on articles and/or editorials. However, if you don’t post articles or editorials, I’ll consider a poem from 2010 if something new is written to accompany it.
  7. Please include  the number of hits your post or poem has received since publishing it.
  8. Please include a link, your name, the name of the blog, and how many hits your overall blog has received.

Deadline: May 31, 2011 (Or at least let’s try that.)

Will everything be accepted? No. I’m going to be judicious. I want to put something together we can be proud of. The length will depend on the interest. My feeling is that the E-Book should max out at 35 entries but, again, this depends on interest.

Please include, with your post, a suggested category. This will help me decide how to organize the E-Book: Poetry, Personal, Essay, Confession, Rant, etc… Make up your own if you like.

Lastly, this is a new idea. Dates and goals might change. All of you can help shape it. I can’t make it happen without you.

If any of you would be willing to help (to be an editor or proofreader or a second opinion with a better idea) I’m glad to accept.

You can find my contact information here.

  1. I have goosebumps.
I have wanted to do something like this, but with my own projects (I just put out
a new children’s book of poems and am putting together a Dec. 2011 collection) I
decided I couldn’t take it on myself.

Have you looked at LULU? You really should, Patrick. You can make the book yourself, then
pay $100 (maybe less, right now they really want to get into epubs) to make a universal epub that
will be sold in the ibookstore and other venues like ipad, ipod, and other e bookstores because epub is universal. You could also go the CreateSpace route and sell it
on Amazon.com but I personally think, right now anyway, that limits where the book will be read (only on Kindles)
Email me if you want to discuss, I’ll tell you what I know – but the technology does keep changing and I suspect Lulu will find a way to sell their epubs in the ibookstore as well as on Kindle store which would be ideal for all of us.
I have a couple poems that did exceptionally well on my blog this year, but I want to retain rights to publish them in my 2011 collection. That ok?

Yes, I’m not looking for rights. I’m doing this to celebrate what we do.

I would love to consider more publishing options, such as at LULU, and would love to talk to you about it. I can’t afford to pay folks for their submissions. I also don’t want to get tangled up in royalties.

If all and any of you are game to submit your work, then the payback will be exposure. If I sell the book for as little as a dollar, then maybe I will earn back the time I put into it. I’m not looking to get rich off of someone else’s work.

  2. Ah, you want us to sell the anthology on our blogs. Not to be a grumpy old (just turned 39) naysayer :) but i truly think the only way to sell ebooks is through the ebookstores already set up out there, mentioned above. It would be complicated to pay all contributors, I know what you’re getting at, so maybe you could think about making the royalties from the anthology all for charity. We could all donate our submissions, and it would simply be a way to get our names out there and our poetry out there. I’d donate a poem to that.
Cheers and kudos to you for taking this on. I can send a lot of talented online poets your way!

Good, but in all honesty, I really do want the focus to be on editorials and articles. I might stipulate that poems will only be accepted with an article. I don’t want just another poetry anthology. In fact, I’m going to stipulate that right now.

That’s the way I want to do it.

This is more about exposure and celebrating what we do, not getting rich. If folks really think they should be entitled to royalty, then I’m willing to consider it, but I’ll have to charge more for the E-Book. It’s going to take time and research to set it up. I’m not a lawyer. If bloggers are willing to forgo royalties, then I can sell the E-Book for a dollar and the proceeds will reimburse me for the time. Let’s see what happens. If bloggers aren’t game, then the idea will fall through.

PS: This does not preclude each contributor’s right to sell the E-Book on their own blog.

That’s OK, and I would rather do that. It’s up to all of you. If you, the bloggers, are willing to forgo royalty in exchange for exposure, then I will go that route and only charge as much as will reimburse my time. The rights to all your work will remain yours.

  3. You are both very brave. To reveal or not to reveal that is the question? Allowing my emotions, my flurry of words to travel through cyber space and hit another with the morning bright light of a charged and ready to go, blackberry, ipad, macbook, pc, desktop robojet, speed demon, big little flat black color coded box.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmm will have to think about it and have my people get in touch with your people.

  4. I’m in, but it seems weird to pick something from our blogs in 2010. In my case, that wouldn’t yield anything, since I don’t publish commentary on my blog.

Wouldn’t it make more sense to request a new short essay paired with a poem created just for this purpose? If it happens to already exist, then that’s fine, but it shouldn’t if it’s already drawn traffic. Plus, you’ll get people to really refine their writing and think through what they’re sharing if it’s allowed to be something new. We could say submit an essay of 1,000 words or fewer along a single poem of any length (short of an epic) and a brief bio.

    What do you think?

Fair enough. A poem from 2010 if it’s accompanied, as you say, by a short essay. Make it good. :-)

  5. Sounds great! Could you please update the entry requirements for sharing with fellow poets? I’ll get started on my essay. It also makes sense, I think, if the essay ties directly in some way to the poem submitted from 2010. But it’s not essential, I guess.

  6. The world in it’s frantically increased four lane high speed to the monstrous jet speed, there seems an urgent requirement to indulge in a phenomenon so delicate and fragile as poetry for the mental stability as well as spiritual calm and composure.

  7. The path of poetry is full of mystical adventures, rather occult and esoteric imagery of the beyond. Just a glimpse of that metaphysical beyond or spiritual otherworld causes the mind and heart of the passer-by of that path get permeated and saturated with a divine tempestuous flow of sublime energy.
