  1. This haiku struck me, but… I can’t say I quite get it. Is there an “explanation”? It feels like there’s something beautiful in it but I can’t crack open the nutshell…

    • Funny you should ask me that. For me, this haiku hit that sweet spot (one that I don’t manage as much as I’d like), where the concrete and beautiful suggests a meaning that is tenuous and allusive. One of my favorite like that, and possibly my favorite haiku by Basho, is this:

      Octopus traps,
      Evanescent dreams beneath
      A midsummer moon.

      The meaning is there but allusive and poignant too. But anyway, I could say what it means to me, but I’d hate to do so and undercut someone else’s differing interpretation. :)
