  1. I wrote this one after Biden quoted Seamus Heaney the other night. I have two titles in mind, either “To My Crazed Once Loving Brother,” or “Birth of Some Nations.” Which do you think sounds better? Thanks.

    That in Chicago
    I’m not shot
    In Portland
    I’m not beat
    For we’ve a space
    To be ourselves, to go
    Our separate rucks,
    Be it Southern
    Duty, honor,
    Dignity
    Or New York
    Or cannibalism,
    Yet far enough apart
    No one else to blame.

  2. Thanks. I ended up posting it as I originally wrote it—

To My Crazed Once Loving Brother

That in Chicago I’m not shot
    In Portland I’m not beat
For we’ve a space to be ourselves
    To go our separate rucks,
    Be it Southern
    Duty, honor, discipline
    Or New York, for cannibalism,
    Yet far enough apart
    No one else to blame.

Well, there goes any prospect–as it has many times before–of publication, career, or a positive review in the New York Times, even if I write the next “Sunday Morning.” But what a wonderful autonomy!

Yes, I can see more variations on this theme than I’ve suggested here. Later, perhaps.

In the meantime, more power to Vermont for its secessionist movements.
