I begin another year’s haiku today with equal parts trepidation and excitement—trepidation because I don’t write quickly. I’ll be up late some nights and overtired, but walking a little of the road each day, or the Tao as the Japanese and Chinese both called it, is something I’ve missed. Additionally, I feel as though a third year will be a complete cycle. I’ll have written three haiku for each day of the year.

I love the form I developed over the last two years and will continue exploring it. By and large, one word in the first and last line with a turn in the second, like a sonnet in some ways but also like the classical haiku in that it draws together disparate ideas. And so something for New Year’s day.
