So, though not in its subject matter, this haiku deliberately tries to imitate some of the classic Japanese haiku. I’ve been reading some of the lesser known poets, whose best haiku, though fewer, are often just as memorable as those of a Basho or Buson. As with the masters, they’ll often contrast two ideas so disparate that one is struck by their inexplicable relationship. I’ve tried to reproduce that in the haiku above. The Japanese wouldn’t have used an exclamation point, but instead would have added emphasis via a cutting word.
