  1. The best I could do today in North Carolina:

    raccoon
    ……cute enough to pet &
    ……….rabid

I would have titled that one “Ambivalence” but note you never use titles with your haiku. Are they ever titled?

    • It was odd to see fox out and about in broad daylight, but it didn’t act rabid. As to titles, a haiku is so short that I’ve always seen titles as cheating. They’re effectively a fourth line. In my own experience, whenever I’m tempted to use titles its because something is missing in the haiku. In your case, the title becomes the haiku’s first line.

All that said, one does occasionally find haiku (by Basho for instance) with titles. From what I can tell, though, these are the exceptions—and they still have the feeling of cheating. :)

  2. Thanks. That clears that up for me.

One other thing…it seems your nature walks in Vermont are less fraught than mine, probably owing to the continental climate. For example, for two successive years I just narrowly missed a copperhead bite deep woods—a $90K hospital/emergency room bill last I read. Late last summer I actually stepped on one but fortunately it pecked my pant leg and didn’t break the skin. Deet of course takes care of the Tiger Mosquitoes. I doubt your climate (or perhaps your socialism) in Vermont insists on as much vigilance and that allows you to muse full Keats (or Wordsworth, as the case may be) no matter how deep in the birches you are. Ergo, truth is more beautiful in Vermont, so to speak. Am I right?

    • Yeah, that’s the idea. And yes, we have no copperheads up here. Not even chiggers. Normally, the most we have to worry about is poison ivy. This summer though, we’re suffering a plague of ticks. They’ve never been so bad. More ticks than mosquitoes or black flies.

  3. While we’re on the subject of pestilence…what can you make of this? I wrote it tonight. Echoes of John Donne?

    A Summer Place

    In pellucid sunlit pools
    Her kiss breeds

    Her possessing imago lifts
    It levitates my head

    I am attached!
She does not let go her
    Meal

    Oooooh…aaaaah….
    Oooooh…aaaaah….

I am delight and host and vector’s
    Vector of her love!

    Oooooh…aaaaah….
    Oooooh…aaaaah….
    SWAT!

It’s been so long or never
    Just as well.

  4. Posting pushed a couple of indented words left. Try again with periods.
