  1. These pictures seem almost Germanic. Does Burlington use zoning laws to maintain the New England charm? Prohibit the Walmarts and big-box wholesalers from hollowing out the downtown, for example?

    • Burlington’s Church Street, a brick and cobblestone pedestrian zone with cafés and restaurants, was inspired by a European city. Burlington is small, with beautiful architecture and a unbeatable view of the Lake Champlain and the Adirondack Mountains. I’ll get more pictures the next time I visit. Vermont, itself, has passed zoning restrictions meant to prevent the unrestricted development of big-box retailers.
