Once again a haiku that maybe, just a little, captures my mood. Leaving Berlin brings with it the many memories of coming and going. Truly, nothing gold can stay.
·
I had a little more time to walk around Berlin today. As I’ve written before, one of things I love the most about Berlin is never knowing what you will see around the next corner.

The building above is a hotel in Charlottenburg. If you’re in a playful mood, you can stay there and they sell T-Shirts on the first floor. I also stopped by the Berlin’s Technikmuseum. Sadly, it wasn’t open or I might have stopped in. But imagine walking around the corner and seeing this:

That’s a real DC-3 up there. Inside the museum are full size boats and what looks like a late 19th schooner ferrying building supplies.
·
And lastly, a little preschool starting up in Charlottenburg this morning. There were already some kids busy playing. You can’t see them. They’re on the floor. But little places like these are everywhere. You’d almost think it was another storefront.

There are some shopping centers in Berlin, but mostly there are little grocery stores, specialty books shops, furniture stores and clothing stores on every block. You wouldn’t think three or four cafés, restaurants or bookstores, all on the same street, could survive, but each block is its own little neighborhood. The stores, schools and bookstores mostly each fit into one large, street level room about the size of a small apartment with maybe a backroom for narrow office space.
·
Burlington, Vermont, my favorite city in the US, is a little like Berlin that way. I’ll be back there soon.
