I traveled to Randolph Vermont today, and saw a rare kind of autumn beauty. A number of fields were snowbound. The edges of a snow covered baseball field lay under a coppery canopy of beech and oaks. There are even a handful of rock maples as green as summer, while whole mountainsides are a stripped to a bare winter’s black. The dissonance of snow under a green maple is magic. And then there are Maples still dropping a late carpet of green and gold, a circular skirt untouched by the snow.
