September 1st 2016

September has arrived. Vermont’s most beautiful month. And next would be January and May. And as of today, I begin my autumn season. Though by the calendar it doesn’t begin until the 21st, my poet’s eye tells me September 1st. The leaves have begun changing, the fields are done with their work, and the asters have come out to bloom—the late and last flowers of the year. Lovers who found each other in the spring, go together into autumn.

The crickets ring as bright as bells tonight, as if more August nights were to come.
