Thunderstorms have threatened all afternoon. While my daughters and I stacked wood, the rumbling made the leaves a little blacker. That was several hours ago and, for all that, the lightning bugs are out and the stars are on their way.

The humidity is a blue and purple gauze. Every creature walks through it in a sort of slumber—cows, horses, and even the crow perched on the somber limb.

Even so, I’ve enjoyed the warmth of other nights like these. The day’s warmth remains. Only a blanket is needed for warmth, and nothing else besides. Skin against skin.
